Grown-ups, kids give big at UUWaco
- Written by Kristen Cervantes

The last three weeks have seen big generosity at UUWaco, from kids and adults alike. On Super Bowl Sunday, UUWaco continued its seven-year tradition of taking up a special offering to be donated to a local charity for the Souper Bowl of Caring. This year we added $355 in cash to our Cereal Sunday donation to Waco food bank Caritas, bringing our total donations (over the seven-year period) to more than $1,000.
Last week also saw UUWaco Treasurer Joe Ahlers making microloans to many of our younger members - each willing family received $20. The kids (with a little help from their parents) used ther money to purchase supplies for a Valentine's Day Bake Sale. With an outlay of $120, our younger congregants created beautiful treats ranging from the edible (sweet treats of every nature) to the
imbibable (hot cocoa and marshmallows) to the wearable (clay-and-bead heart charms), which were offered for sale before and after the Valentine's Day service.
The Valentine's Day Sale was a rousing success—the kids brought in over $500. The church's microloans will be repaid in full, and the profits over and above the origibal loan amounts used to invest in one or more new microloans through Kiva.org. The loans, sale and re-lending of the money all tie into teaching these young entrepreneurs about the UUSC (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee) Guest at Your Table funding drive.
And speaking of Guest at Your Table (GAYT), this Sunday, Feb. 14, also saw the collection of UUWaco's annual GAYT boxes. Despite the many other calls on members' and friends' time and concern, UUWaco raised more than $900, an increase of $700+ over last year's donations. Six members contributed at the matching level - a $100 donation got our money matched by a UU church is Massachusetts. Twenty-one generous UUWacoans, including the six mentioned above, donated enough to become members of the UUSC. With our donations and other from around the UU world, the UUSC will be able to continue its essential work, advancing human rights and social justice in the US and abroad.
All in all, it's been a busy and beneficent few weeks at UUWaco. Stay tuned for updates on UUWaco's social action in partnership with Caritas, the UUSC, Kiva.org and more.
